Located in the northeastern region of the United States, the Middle States comprise five states –Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania – and the District of Columbia. The Middle States are bordered by Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, the Atlantic Ocean, the Canadian provinces of Ottawa and Quebec, Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio. The population of the region is more than 47.4 million, or about 16 per cent of the nation’s total, and covers over 118,000 square miles.
The higher education system of the Middle States includes 715 universities and colleges, enrolling over 2.2 million undergraduate students annually in the fall. Of these institutes, 215 are public and 500 are private; 475 are four year institutes, and 240 are two year colleges. New York and Pennsylvania have the highest number of universities and colleges in the US after California, and they are home to over three quarters of the Middle States’ higher educational institutes. Pennsylvania has 111 two year colleges – the second highest number in the US after California.
